'And the time came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom' Anaïs Nin Elizabeth Lesser shows how it is possible to deal with fearful change or a painful loss and be reborn, like the Phoenix, to a more vibrant and enlightened self. In Broken Open she shares penetrating tales from her own life, the lives of those she has taught and counselled and the lives of friends and family, tales that explore the big challenges of death, illness and divorce, as well as the daily roller coaster rides of relationships, parenting and work. Woven into these stories are quotations from great poets and philosophers. And following them is a toolbox of valuable aids, including meditation, psychological enquiry and spiritual practice. The result is a book that runs the gamut of the human experience, and in a style that is genuine, funny, often heartbreaking, but always inspiring, she shows us how we, too, can allow the pain of adversity to break us open instead of breaking us down, making us bitter or closing our hearts.

Broken Open

“I can't risk them making a scene closer to the time we open.” “There are ways I can make that a reality.” They pounded on the glass so loud he worried they'd break it. He turned quickly, very close to the glass.

Beyond passion. And beyond their control… Five years ago, Tuesday Eastwood's life collapsed and left her devastated. After an empty, nomadic existence, she's finally pieced her life back together in the small Oregon town of Hood River. Now Tuesday has everything sorted out. Just so long as men are kept for sex, and only sex… Then she met him. Musician and rancher Ezra Hurley isn't the man of Tuesday's dreams. He's a verboten fantasy—a man tortured by past addictions whose dark charisma and long, lean body promise delicious carnality. But this craving goes far beyond chemistry. It's primal. It's insatiable. And it won't be satisfied until they're both consumed, body and soul…

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The soul is the river of energy that underlies the activity of all life. It is real, and it lives on after our bodies die. If you are in the habit of negating the longings of your soul, or if the idea of having a soul makes you nervous, then consider Rumi’s advice: When you do something from your soul, you feel a river moving in you. #2 The stories in this part of the book are about what it takes to listen to and respond to the call of your soul. If you regularly paint or sing or write poetry or listen to uplifting music, or if you meditate and pray, you know what it feels like when your soul and you are in contact. #3 When Route 25 leaves the mountains of northern New Mexico, the city of Albuquerque suddenly appears like a mirage. I had never visited Albuquerque, and I went looking for a psychic. #4 The Road of Truth was the home of The Mouthpiece of Spirit. The psychic there had the most hair I had ever seen. She had a dusky voice and a regional twang. She reminded me of Mae West. I was afraid to ask her for life direction, because I knew that I would not be able to solve my problem using the same mixed-up thinking that got me into it in the first place.

This volume has arisen from the 26th International LAUD Symposium on “Humboldt and Whorf Revisited. Universal and Culture-Specific Conceptualizations in Grammar and Lexis”. While contrasting two or more languages, the papers in this volume either provide empirical evidence confirming hypotheses related to linguistic relativity, or deal with methodological issues of empirical research. These new approaches to Whorf’s hypotheses do not focus on mere theorizing but provide more and more empirical evidence gathered over the last years. They prove in a very sophisticated way that Whorf’s ideas were very lucid ones, even if Whorf’s insights were framed in a terminology which lacked the flexibility of linguistic categories developed over the last quarter of this century, especially in cognitive linguistics. To date, there is sufficient proof to claim that linguistic relativity is indeed a vital issue, and the current volume confirms a more general trend for rehabilitating Whorf’s theory complex and also offers evidence for it. It contains articles written by scholars from various fields of linguistics including phonology, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, historical linguistics, anthropological linguistics and (cross-)cultural semantics, which all contribute to a re-evaluation and partial reformulation of Whorf’s thinking.

Palmer explains further, “Imagine that small, clenched fist of a heart 'broken open' into largeness of life, into greater capacity to hold one's own and the world's pain and joy.” Thus a broken heart remains an open heart.
