This is the most comprehensive history of the Netherlands available in the English language. It surveys Dutch history from the 16th century, when the nation took shape as a geographical, administrative and political entity, right through to the Netherlands of today. Examining domestic politics and wider international contexts, as well as economic and cultural history, Friso Wielenga provides a varied and in-depth investigation that will lead to a rich understanding of the country's past. The book also challenges misplaced preconceptions regarding political consensus and religious toleration in the country and offers a balanced assessment of developments across the early modern, modern and contemporary eras. This new edition includes: * One brand new chapter on the Netherlands since 1945 * Much more material on colonial history, slavery, the decolonisation of Indonesia and the contemporary legacy of colonialism * Historiographical updates throughout * A wealth of new images, maps, tables and figures This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a knowledge of Dutch history since 1500.

Excerpt from History of the Netherlands: Holland and Belguim Although the heroic period of Netherland history has been brilliantly illustrated by Mr. Motley, yet the researches of Dutch and Belgian scholars have brought to light impor tant facts which present some of the prominent personages and events of that period in a new aspect. This book, which is designed for mature as well as young readers, gives an independent View of these and of later annals, with the aids which European and American scholarship has furnished for their elucidation. While availing myself of the researches of Motley and Prescott, of Davies and Grattan, my judgments of men and measures are mainly derived from a study of original authorities. A History of Surgery

This book has been written with a view to meeting this need. In it, Dutch surgery has by no means been taken as an isolated phenomenon, but considered in its context with European surgery as a whole.

Surgery as a medical discipline has from its beginnings appealed to the imagination of many. It is therefore not surprising to find that its colourful past has induced quite a few authors to take up their pens. The truth of this in the Netherlands is witnessed by a number of dissertations and monographs and especially by the numerous articles related to the history of surgery which have appeared in the medical weekly Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde, particularly during the two decades preceding the Second World War. The memorial volume, published in 1977 by the 'Nederlandse Vereniging voor Heelkunde' (Association of Surgeons of the Netherlands) has thoroughly covered the history of Dutch surgery since the tum of the century, but a chronological survey of the earlier events which led to these modem achievements is still wanting. This book has been written with a view to meeting this need. In it, Dutch surgery has by no means been taken as an isolated phenomenon, but considered in its context with European surgery as a whole. Foreign influences on the on surgery abroad are discussed Netherlands and, conversely, Dutch influences whilst contemporary medical thinking is set against a cultural and political back ground. It is hoped that this approach will allow the book to exceed the narrow boundaries of'campanilismo' and make it of interest to non-Dutch readers as well.
